This shallow understanding of salvation and the gospel, known as "easy-believism," stands in stark contrast to what the Bible teaches. To put it simply, the gospel call to faith presupposes that sinners must repent of their sin and yield to Christ's authority. This, in a nutshell, is what is commonly referred to as lordship salvation.

What, then, are the distinctives of lordship salvation? What does Scripture teach that is embraced by those who affirm lordship salvation but rejected by proponents of "easy-believism"? The following are nine distinctives of a biblical understanding of salvation and the gospel.

Sixth, Scripture teaches that Jesus is Lord of all, and the faith He demands involves unconditional surrender (Romans 6:17-18; 10:9-10). In other words, Christ does not bestow eternal life on those whose hearts remain set against Him (James 4:6). Surrender to Jesus' lordship is not an addendum to the biblical terms of salvation; the summons to submission is at the heart of the gospel invitation throughout Scripture. In contrast, easy-believism teaches that submission to Christ's supreme authority is not germane to the saving transaction.

Most Christians recognize that these nine distinctives are not new or radical ideas. The preponderance of Bible-believing Christians over the centuries have held these to be basic tenets of orthodoxy. In fact, no major orthodox movement in the history of Christianity has ever taught that sinners can spurn the lordship of Christ yet lay claim to Him as Savior.

The law of property acts did not abolish manorial lordships and manorial lordships may be bought and sold, but a new lord is not automatically entitled to documents relating to the manor, unless these have been specifically conveyed to him. The case Beaumont v Jeffery (1925) established that the lord of a manor could sell the lordship while retaining ownership of any documents in his possession relating to the manor. Conversely, it was also established that manorial documents could be disposed of by the lord while the lordship itself could be retained. A new lord is not entitled, as of right, to obtain copies of documents relating to the manor to which he has acquired the title, although these may be purchased at the discretion of the owners or custodians, normally an archive repository. A manorial lord is entitled to those documents created in the period during which he is the lord.

The MDR is not a register of title to lordships and we do not collect or record information relating to the owners of manorial titles or manorial rights and information concerning the conveyance of a title will not be recorded in the MDR. The MDR need only be informed of a transfer of a manorial title should the conveyance include a manorial document or documents, as defined by the Manorial Documents Rules. No register of manorial lordships is maintained and therefore there is no obligation for owners to register a manorial title.

A voluntary registration of a manorial title with the Land Registry was, until recently, possible. The title lacks physical substance; it is simply the right to call yourself a Lord, but abounds in snob value and is therefore, what is most commonly bought and sold - though perhaps not on the website I visited. The second and third elements are the actual objects comprised in the manor: land and rights.\n\n\u00a0Manorial land is land within the original geographic bounds of the manor which has not subsequently been conveyed away from the manorial title; the latter being the key point. Most manors have divested themselves of most of their land; either on account of impecunious families raising cash, or tenants enfranchising the copyhold land they held from the Lord and becoming the new freehold owners of it. If land now remains in manors therefore, it tends to be the smaller areas such as verges, river banks, commons and other rough land that has since been forgotten about. \u00a0\n\n* Subscribe to Country Life and save 40% \n\nManorial rights are the third element and are the rights the Lord retained over the land, notwithstanding that most of it would have been farmed by his tenants. Such rights include sporting rights and rights to work mines and minerals. Special rights or \u2018franchises' may also have been granted directly to the Lord by the Crown, such as the right to hold fairs. Although rights were sometimes conveyed away from the manor either alone, or with land, because such rights are often forgotten about, or not considered important enough to be dealt with specifically on a sale, they quite often remain in the manor. \u00a0\n\nNeedless to say then that, where there are assets, there is someone willing to try and make some money: less scrupulous elements have bought up manors which still owned scraps of land and then attempted to stop residents reaching their homes, by claiming that by doing so, they were driving over his land, in this case, the verge. This specific trick was largely halted by the string of cases regarding access over common land, but claims to manorial sporting rights, have also been used to try and ransom people's use of their own land. The joy for solicitors and judges when trying to sort this all out of course, is that there is usually next to no paperwork and anyone that did know anything is dead. \u00a0\n\nIn order to clear up what is undoubtedly an (even more than usual) arcane area of law and prevent further exploitation of the confusion surrounding it, the Land Registry have set a deadline of 13 October 2013. By this date, all manorial rights (and other overriding interests i.e. unwritten or customary rights over land) must be registered. If they are not and someone then buys the land over which the rights are exercisable without notice of them, the rights will be extinguished. For owners of such rights, this should be a treated as a warning to get on with protecting them now (either by registration, or entering a caution against first registration), or risk losing them.\u00a0 \u00a0\n\u00a0\nFor those living on manorial land who are currently having trouble with their Lords, however, I suggest they start enforcing a few of their own rights under the manorial system: providing a manorial court to hear your grievances at the Lord's own expense for starters, or perhaps demanding that he keeps proper records of your goats and chickens?
